Work by work cycles: a recommended planning method
Shift work is a popular option for organizing working hours that is highly valued by employees. Although this specific system was repealed by a law dated August 20, 2008 (in France), nothing prevents companies, under the new unified system for organizing working hours, from distributing working hours across shifts.
What is a work cycle?
A work cycle is a period of up to 12 weeks during which working hours can be distributed differently from week to week.
Some weeks may involve hours worked above or below the legal workweek limit. Weeks with longer hours and weeks with shorter hours balance each other out, so that the average weekly work hours comply with the law.
- The distribution of working hours must be identical from one cycle to the next.
- Maximum weekly working hours must comply with applicable laws and regulations.
For a service that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, shift work is essential. For those responsible for scheduling, it can sometimes be very difficult to implement.
